Les Miserables

Victor Hugo's masterpiece criticizes the inhumanity and inequity of post-revolutionary France through Jean Valjean's story. Jean stole bread to feed his starving relatives and was imprisoned and sentenced to hard labor. Valjean escapes, but the obsessive Inspector Javet makes it his life's mission to track down the fugitive. Les Misérables is one of the greatest novels of the 19th Century.
