Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau had very different philosophies. Emerson was far more involved with society, while Thoreau wanted to seclude himself as much as possible. However, both thinkers shared a deep and spiritual love of nature which pervades their transcendentalist beliefs. Their approach to nature and self-reliance is an essential component of the American psyche.
